While it retained the sleek lines and performance of the Mustang, the Apache was fitted with dive brakes and bomb racks, making it a formidable low-level strike aircraft in the Mediterranean and China-Burma-India theatres. Its combat success paved the way for the later dominance of the P-51 fighter series.
